The 'active' part of an active shooter event means all of us need to respond quickly. In the three minutes it is likely to take officers to arrive on scene there is much you can do to increase your chance of survival:
Run
If you can get away from the area, do so.
Hide
If you can't safely get away, lock and barricade yourself in a room.
Fight
If you can't hide, fight.
Watch the film "Run - Hide - Fight". This video, recently produced by the Houston Mayor’s Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security, dramatizes an active shooter incident in the workplace. Its purpose is to educate the public on how to respond during such an incident. Warning: The initial sequence in this video may be disturbing.
Violence Prevention Training
The SIU Department of Public Safety offers free training upon request at Trueblood Hall for students, faculty and staff on what to do in case of an active shooter.
